Over the last few years no diet has had more press coverage than the Atkins diet. But what is this miracle weight loss program and are there any draw backs?
The Atkins diet was first pushed forward by Robert Atkins but he didn’t invent it, he just read about it in a scientific journal, and then made it his own!
Even though it is surrounded with controversy, the Atkins diet has been shown to be a very effective weight loss system time and time again.
People lose weight when they stick to this diet.
Atkins diet foods
So what does the diet entail and what can you eat?
The basis of the Atkins diet is that you limit your sugar and carbs intake and your body takes care of the weight loss. The theory is that your body either uses sugar or carbohydrates to produce energy. If your body doesn’t have access to either of these then it starts to burn fat. Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it, but it actually works.
Atkins diet foods then? You need to avoid foods high in carbs or sugars.

Seems a little counter intuitive doesn’t it?
Note that you need to break yourself into the atkins diet in phases.
Phase 1, The Induction
During phase 1 you might find the diet difficult. You need to almost completely cut out the carbs. This will leave you feeling drained unfortunately and until you get used to it you will be irritable.
During phase one you need to only have 20 – 25 grams of carbs a day.
Phase one will help you shed as much weight as you like but once you get to your ideal weight you will want to start introducing some carbs back into your every day diet.
Phase 2, Ongoing
During phase 2 you will be consuming 15 – 20 grams of carbs a day and will be slowly increasing it by 5 grams per week. Everything you ate in phase one is fine and you can add in some dairy, nuts and fruit.
Atkins diet side effects
Sounds great. Major weight loss, quickly and effectively. But are there any atkins diet side effects? Well yes, there are.
The main problem is the massive irritability that comes with the lack of carbs. No carbs equals no energy and at first you will feel like you haven’t slept for a week, but persist and you can reep the rewards of fast and efficient weight loss.
