I have been dabbling with the concept of getting my internal system to be more alkaline but I didn’t really know why it was better for me or what I needed to do. This book clearly outlines what the whole concept means and provides easy steps for how to go about achieving it.

I learned so many interesting and useful tidbits of information. For one thing I didn’t know that rice and pasta were acid forming foods. For another I didn’t know some acidity, especially in the stomach, is necessary in order for food to be broken down and assimilated. I thought the goal was 100% alkalinity, but the author Jake Hargis, explains otherwise. He also says stress contributes to acidity, which makes so much sense. The book also gives you specific markers on how to spot how alkalinity has manifested in your body.

Finally there are simple actionable steps you can take to remedy the situation. What I love is that Hargis doesn’t recommend going cold turkey and eliminating everything, but rather advises one to cut back slowly on acidic foods while incorporating healthier habits. This was an easy read packed full of useful information.

“Alkaline Foods – A Guide for Your pH Balance Diet Plan” by Jake Hargis came to be of interest to me, because of a very healthy older woman my wife knows. She is well-versed in the virtues of maintaining a pH balanced body, and recently installed a $4,000+ fancy water filter in her house, for the sole purpose of alkalinizing her drinking water. Naturally, after a lengthy discussion about this topic, my wife came home sold on the idea of doing something to lower both our bodies’ acidity.

This book does a fairly decent job of further explaining why excessive acidity is such a negative condition for the human body. Indeed, the book was almost depressing in that virtually ALL my favorite foods are on the “too acidic” list, while all kinds of things I have never even tried are on the “gotta start eating” list. BUT… and it’s a BIG but, the health benefits are incredible, and incredibly convincing.

Of greatest interest to me is the kidneys’ responses to acidic and/or alkaline environments. Of equal interest is the link to inflammation disorders such as arthritis, and even its role as a precursor to cancer. I have marginal kidneys, due in part to lupus, and perhaps in greater part to a hefty regimen of anti-inflammatory medications for nearly 20 years. Consequently I can no longer take nearly all anti-inflammatory meds.

However, to be perfectly honest with myself, I must now admit that my dietary intake of carbonated sodas, sweets, fats, fast foods, red meat, and basically EVERYTHING I like to eat, probably has been an even bigger contributor to my current health conditions.

I just downloaded and read this book less than 2 hours ago, so obviously I have no experience to relate as far as the efficacy of this information, but based on the scientific explanations included herein, along with the information my wife’s friend gave her, I am now determined to change my dietary intake however necessary to help my body fend off the effects of a lifetime of eating wrong.

Oh, yeah… one other point made in this and other similar books is the fact that obesity, which we ALL know is rampant in America, is one way the body responds to an overly acidic diet. Therefore, restoring pH balance generally also leads to a weight loss, actually bringing the body to its NATURAL weight and maintaining it there.

This book happens to be free today, so you have no excuse to NOT get it, read it, and live it. I’m not overly anxious to cut back on red meat and replace it with more green veggies, but if it helps my kidneys recover, helps me lose a good chunk of excess weight, and helps fight my inflammatory disorder(s), I will be back in a few months or a year to update this review. Until then, I’ve been convinced.

This book breaks down what most people don’t know: our bodies spend a TON of energy trying to maintain the pH balance between acidity and alkalinity. By consuming more alkaline foods (fruits and vegetables) and less acid foods (bread, coffee, alcohol), you can dramatically improve your health and your energy levels by freeing your body from the burden of processing too much acid. A great read.
